Description: The banners are red with gold lettering and are the battle banners of the 47th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry. They were organized at Camp Dennison on August 13, 1861. They joined General Sherman on his March to the Sea on November 15th, 1864 and were mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas on August 11, 1865. The text of banners reads: Chattanooga & Mission Ri[d]ge; Charleston, VA; Wilstach Regiment; Tuscumbia, ALA.; Siege of Jackson; Vicksburg, MISS. Description: Photograph showing Birdie Schmidt (later Birdie Schmidt Larrick) with fellow performers in the American Red Cross Cinemobile and 7th Army Special Service Show, at the Stadt Theater in Heidelberg, Germany, September 1945. From left to right are Chuck Moffett, Schmidt, John O'Neil, Helen Malsed, and Eddy Phillips. Seated in front is Sidney Porcelain. During World War II, Columbus native Birdie Schmidt Larrick (1919-2009) became the only woman serving in the Red Cross to have an American bomber named after her. In early December 1943, Birdie traveled to the Air Base in Wendling, England, as program director of the American Red Cross (ARC) Aero Club. Also stationed in Wendling was the 392nd Bombardment Group (BG), which moved to the base in August 1943 and was assigned to the 8th Air Force. As program director, and later as director, Birdie’s responsibilities included managing the Aero Club staff, organizing programs and events for the enlisted men and officers, and managing the club's supplies for soldiers. Because of her popularity among the men at the base, the 392nd named a B-24 Liberator the “Birdie Schmidt ARC” in her honor. A portrait of Birdie’s face was painted on one side of the bomber with the symbol for the Red Cross on the other. The plane flew missions from August 1944 until it was shot down in February 1945. That same year, Birdie joined the ARC Cinemobile and performed with the 7th Army Special Service Shows before returning home in November of 1945. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The photograph shows a headstone in a cemetery reading "Stecher," which sits between two small pines. More headstones sit before and behind the Stecher monument, with large trees growing throughout the cemetery lawn. The stone most likely marks the grave of George J. Stecher, Harry Kinley's maternal grandfather. George J. and Christina Stecher immigrated from Germany to Upper Sandusky, Ohio in 1854. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's store, and later as a traveling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). Kinley was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Description: Caption reads: "New Zoar Meeting House." The brick meeting house was built by the Society of Separatists of Zoar in 1853. When the Society of Separatists of Zoar was dissolved in 1898 the former members of the Society formed an Evangelical church which held services in this building. A group of separatists from Germany, eventually known as Zoarites, established the small community of Zoar in Tuscarawas County in 1817. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, they had separated from the official German religion, the Lutheran Church. The community of Zoar was not originally organized as a commune, but its residents had a difficult time surviving in 1818 and early 1819. As a result, on April 19, 1819, the group formed the Society of Separatists of Zoar. Each person donated his or her property to the community as a whole. In exchange for their work, the society would provide for them. In the decades following the establishment of the Zoar commune, the separatists experienced economic prosperity. Due in part to influences from the outside world and the death of original residents, in 1898, the remaining members decided to dissolve the society, and its property was divided among the Zoarites. Description: This photograph is a black-and-white image of a colorful mural titled "Mail—The Connecting Link’," painted in 1938 by artist Sally F. Haley (1908-2007). The mural depicts the significant role that mail (and the postal service) plays in the life of individuals and of the entire nation. Three human figures (a mail carrier, a woman, and a little girl) occupy the center of the image, forming a triangular space that divides the background between urban and rural settings. The mail carrier is delivering a letter to the woman as the little girl watches. Bags of mail travel to distant locations via trains (rural areas and small towns) and boats (large urban areas). On the left side the mural, a railroad signal bears the number “1938,” the year that Haley painted the mural. The mural, painted in oil on canvas, is located in the McConnelsville, Ohio, post office. It measures 5 feet high by 17 feet wide. The mural was funded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Section of Painting and Sculpture, one of the department’s three visual arts programs instituted during the Great Depression. Established in 1934, the Section of Painting and Sculpture commissioned artists to create paintings and sculpture that would decorate new federal buildings. The commissions were awarded competitively. Unlike other cultural programs of the New Deal, the Section’s primary goal was to procure art for public buildings, not to provide work relief. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Sally Haley was the daughter of Elizabeth Akers Haley and John P. Haley, a portrait photographer. John Haley was a friend of photographers Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. Two of Sally’s brothers also became artists. In 1931, Sally Haley graduated from Yale University with a bachelor of fine arts degree. She taught art in a Bridgeport high school for two years, studied art in Germany for a few months, and then returned to the U.S. to paint full time. In 1935 she married artist Michele Russo, and the couple lived in Connecticut until 1947, when they moved to Portland, Oregon. Haley was very active in the Portland art scene, and her paintings were widely praised. She died in 2007 at age 99. In 1988 photographer Connie Girard took color and black-and-white images of this mural for an article in "Timeline" magazine (June/July 1989). View on Ohio Memory.
